2022 National Youth Championships for Girls Day Five Wrap: Queensland, NSW Metro crowned champions on final day
Queensland Maroon and NSW Metro have been crowned champions after a thrilling final day at the 2022 National Youth Championships for Girls in Coffs Harbour on Friday.
Another gloomy day greeted the players at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium for day five. But while day four of the tournament was abandoned due to severe wet weather on Thursday, the play was able to go ahead on Friday after finals matches were moved to the synthetic pitches.
In the under-14s final, NSW Metro took on Queensland having dominated after topping group A with a 100 per cent winning record.
NSW Metro was also looking for a repeat of their 3-1 victory over Queensland in the group stage on Tuesday.
And NSW Metro was able to complete their perfect tournament, downing Queensland 1-0 in the final thanks to Talia Younis鈥 winner.
Victoria defeated Capital Football in a dramatic penalty shootout in the third v fourth play-off, after Tina Huang and Lucy Cameron had scored in normal time.
In the under-16s decider, group A winners Queensland Maroon took on Victoria Blue looking to reverse the result of their opening game of the tournament on Monday when they went down 2-1.
And Kelly Crew鈥檚 side did just that, with Grace Kuilamu鈥檚 classy second-half winner securing a 1-0 victory for Queensland Maroon.
NSW Metro defeated NSW Country in the third v fourth play-off, with Tea Mucenski scoring the only goal.
There were also a number of awards presented at the tournament鈥檚 conclusion.
西瓜影视 Community Refereeing Manager Jacqui Hurford presented the awards for the Referee of the Tournament to Molly Godsell from Football NSW and Courtney Van Diesen from Football Victoria for the under-14s and under-16s tournaments respectively.
西瓜影视 Head of Goalkeeping and Matildas' Goalkeeper Coach Tony Franken presented the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award to Capital Football鈥檚 Georgia Ritchie in the under-14s and Jasmine Black from NSW Metro in the under-16s.
Younis鈥 day got even better after 西瓜影视 National Teams High-Performance Manager Michael Nielsen announced her as the under-14s player of the tournament, with Ischia Brooking from Western Australia the under-16s player of the tournament.
The tournament kicked off in Coffs Harbour on Monday with more than 350 of the best female under-14s and 16s players from across Australia taking part.
The tournament returned this year after two years away due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2022 National Youth Championships for Boys will be played next week.
