CommBank Young Socceroos Head Coach Trevor Morgan today announced a squad of 23 players to attend a World Cup pre-camp ahead of the FIFA U20 World Cup Chile 2025鈩.
The FIFA U20 World Cup Chile 2025鈩, scheduled from 27 September to 19 October, features 24 teams from across the globe, with the CommBank Young Socceroos sealing their place in the 24th edition of the bi-annual tournament courtesy of their history-making victory at the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2025鈩.
The squad will be cut to 21 players before Australia begin their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign against European heavyweights, Italy at the Estadio El铆as Figueroa Brander in Valpara铆so on Sunday, 28 September.
Their Group D schedule will see the CommBank Young Socceroos stay in Valpara铆so to tackle their second opponents, Argentina, on Wednesday, 1 October before travelling to Santiago to end the group phase against Cuba on Saturday, 4 October at the Estadio Nacional Julio Mart铆nez Pr谩danos.
Morgan has selected a squad featuring 17 members of the victorious AFC U20 Asian Cup 2025鈩 roster. The squad sees the return of Nathan Amanatidis, Liam Bonetig, Max Caputo, Daniel Graskoski and Rhys Youlley - all of whom have been capped by Australia at Under-20 level and involved in the current cycle, with the addition of James Overy who impressed at the U18 UEFA Friendship Cup in June.
Notably, Paul Okon-Engstler can follow in the footsteps of his father Paul who represented Australia in their fourth-place finish at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Portugal 1991. They could become the first father-son duo to play for Australia in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
CommBank Young Socceroos Head Coach Trevor Morgan said he was pleased to have a talented squad available that will take on the world鈥檚 best youth players.
鈥淔rom our first match in June 2023 until now, this group of players have shown themselves to be very competitive with quality, character and a great desire to represent Australia with pride.
鈥淲e have built a great deal of self-confidence through the experiences gained in multiple tournaments along the way developing great belief and team culture within this squad.
鈥淲inning the Asian Cup has raised the team鈥檚 expectations of the performances they can deliver and given them the chance to test themselves at the highest level in a World Cup. 鈥
鈥淲e are looking forward to assembling the group in camp and working hard together to be ready for this amazing opportunity.鈥
The FIFA U20 World Cup Chile 2025鈩 will also provide a preview into the future of the game. Some of Australia鈥檚 greatest international players represented the nation at previous tournaments including Mark Viduka, Aaron Mooy, Mark Bresciano, Lucas Neill, Mile Jedinak, Craig Moore, Trent Sainsbury and Joshua Kennedy who progressed not only to make their senior debuts but to represent and captain Australia at AFC Asian Cups, FIFA World Cups and Olympic Games.
The CommBank Young Socceroos will represent Asia alongside Saudi Arabia and former U-20 silver medallists Japan and Korea Republic.
The Group Stage of the tournament will see the top two teams advance to the round of 16 alongside the four best third place finishers.
The knockout phase starts with the Round of 16 (7-9 October), followed by the quarterfinals (11-12 October), semifinals (Wednesday, 15 October) and the final on Sunday, 19 October 2025.
