CommBank Matildas to play historic home international in Townsville

The opening match of the Commonwealth Bank Matildas international series with New Zealand will be a historic encounter in Townsville, Queensland on Friday, 8 April at QCB Stadium.   

This home international will be the first time the Australian women鈥檚 national team has ever played in Townsville, with the match set to be the first football fixture to be played at world-class QCB Stadium since it opened in 2020.

The last time the two sides met was at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with Australia coming out on top with a 2-1 victory in the opening group match.

Queensland Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Commonwealth Bank Matildas and the Football Ferns would make football history in Townsville.

鈥淭he women鈥檚 international in Townsville will be a game of firsts,鈥 Mr Hinchliffe said.

鈥淚t will be the first time the Matildas have played in North Queensland and the code鈥檚 first match at Townsville鈥檚 Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

鈥淨ueensland is seeing solid growth in women鈥檚 football and the number of girls taking up the game.

鈥淏y bringing international football to Townsville we can show young North Queenslanders what鈥檚 possible and inspire them to bring their best game and stay active.

Mayor of Townsville, Cr Jenny Hill said the hosting of the Commonwealth Bank Matildas was a real coup for the city.

鈥淎ustralia and New Zealand will host the FIFA Women鈥檚 World Cup鈩 next year, so to have each country鈥檚 national football team play an international match in Townsville ahead of the World Cup is a major coup for the city,鈥 Cr Hill said.

鈥淐ouncil is proud to throw its support behind bringing these two national-level women鈥檚 football teams to Townsville. To have the team back on home soil for the first time in 2022 and playing in Townsville for the first time will be great for our city鈥檚 economy and for diehard football fans across the state.

鈥淒uring the past year Townsville has had plenty of practice showing support for world-class sporting matches at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, with the State of Origin and the Rugby Championship both hosted in our city. Council is already looking forward to activating the city to welcome the teams and supporters to the north.鈥

Tickets to this historic encounter start at $69 family, $26 adults, $21 concessions and $16 children excluding transaction fees.

The pre-sale for Football Account holders will commence at 10.00 am (AEST), Thursday 10 March, with the General Public tickets window opening at 11.00 am (AEST), Monday 14 March via Ticketmaster.

$1 (plus GST) from every ticket will be donated to the  for women and girls with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury or symptoms from stroke.

The second match in the two-match series will see the Commonwealth Bank Matildas in action on Tuesday, 12 April 2022 at Canberra鈥檚 GIO Stadium.   

Both matches will be broadcast live and free on 10 Bold and simulcast on 10 Play and Paramount+, with coverage to commence from 7:00 pm AEST.
